Capital District Football Officials Association |
Another icon of officiating in the Capital District passed away yesterday, Willard Doran. Willard was a lifetime member of our organization. Most of his football career was served at the umpire position and he presented a commanding stature, in field presence, control of a game and in the professional way that he treated players, coaches and fellow officials. He also served our group as an officer and a teacher for almost every conceivable committee. For many years he was Dom Denio's umpire (Dom passed away earlier this year) and both of their names grace our excelling associate award (the Denio-Doran Award).
Although a big part of our officiating history his overall life accomplishments seem to pale his referee exploits. He held many professional and community leadership positions.

It is with the highest level of sadness that I must pass on the news that Dom Denio passed away Wednesday of this week; he was 92. A legend in the Capital District, he excelled as a coach and referee in multiple sports, as a teacher, and as a father to 18 children. As a young basketball and football official he touched my life in those formative years with an unmatched level of personal professionalism. When Dom stood up to speak at one of our meetings, the room fell silent; everyone respected and wanted to hear what Dom had to say. For those of our members that grew up in the Capital District and were involved in football or basketball, Don certainly touched your life at one time or another. Our Associate Award is named in honor of Dom.
